Sacred Moments Do You Treasure Them?

Do not miss those sacred moments!

Sacred moments are fleeting and often missed. Do you even notice them? Can you look back upon those times in your life that you now know were precious, yet you realize you didn’t experience them fully? Perhaps you were too busy thinking about something else, somewhere you had to go or something you thought you needed to do? You can change that and I suggest you begin now. This is your life, wouldn’t it be a shame to throw it away for a to do list?

Every morning we are born again. What we do today is what matters most.” ― Gautama Buddha

When you look back upon those special times, those sacred times in your life I’ll bet major holidays, promotions or big material gifts aren’t the first things that come to mind. What may come to mind is the birth of your children; or a special adoring look from one of them; a sunset or a sunrise; gazing upon the first flower of spring or the blue sky with puffy white clouds. If those were your sacred moments why then are we going after “stuff” to make us happy? Can you remember cutting those moments short because you were too busy going after another moment?

Sacred space and sacred moments

There are many ways to cultivate the sacred in our life. We certainly can create a sacred space in our home or environment that, when we pass by that candle, altar, or meditation space, brings us into that place of reverence. If we practice meditation in that place all the better, but this article is about noticing the sacred in the every day activities. Even working in a busy office has moments filled with sacred qualities and it’s up to us to allow them in. The truth is the scared moments are there, but we must be available to them.

If you’re a parent with young children spend a few moments quietly communing with them. You could sit beside them while they color in a book or do a puzzle or board game together. Quiet your mind and pay attention to the moment. Notice when your thoughts wander from this activity and bring them back. Try and match your child’s breath and perhaps even their posture. Pay attention to the feelings in your heart and the delight you may experience. All of this will bring you closer and you’ll know and understand them in a deeper way.

“Breathe next to me. And I will capture a piece of your soul along with mine.” ― Marikit dR. Camba, Vividly Vague

Precious Moments are Everywhere

When with your romantic or life partner notice your habit of brushing aside the time with them assuming you’ll have plenty more. Instead, try looking deeply into their eyes while listening to what they are saying. Instead of answering the phone while they’re talking; make their words, their feelings the most important thing in the world, if only for a few precious moments. Chances are your relationship will deepen and you may get the same kind of attention from them. When at work listen to your co-workers. Notice your need to get the next word in and instead bring yourself back to what they are saying. A good way to be present and calm your need to say something is to pay attention to your breath. It’s possible that you’ll hear a lot more than you have in the past and perhaps even get inspired to do something noteworthy in your place of business You’ll notice that the examples I’ve set out above all have to do with being with another, giving them attention and listening deeply. We can experience the sacred by simply taking a walk in nature and paying exquisite attention to life around us. Yes, our lives are busy and filled with a to do list, but if we miss the memorable, the beautiful and the special moments along the way; then what’s the point?

Keys to experiencing your sacred moments

Many psychologists are now recognizing the healing quality of noticing sacred moments and some are even bringing that teaching into their therapy practice. In Dr. Elisha Goldstein’s published article “Sacred Moments: Implications on Well-Being and Stress” in the Journal of Clinical Psychology he found that integrating mindful principles into daily life for just 5 minutes a day over 3 weeks resulted in significant reductions in stress and significant increases in life satisfaction; positive relations with others, and environmental mastery – all key players in creating a life worth living. http://elishagoldstein.com/resources/cultivating-the-sacred-in-your-life/ So, don’t miss those sacred moments, those precious times; savor them!
