Can the Power of Words Change Your Life?
Yes, I believe the power of words can change your life. Words come in many forms. You hear them, you read them and you think them. No matter what form they come in they impact your heart, your mind and your feelings about yourself.
Who thought up that ridiculous nursery rhyme many of us were brought up with? I say it should go more like this “Sticks and stones may break your bones but words… can break your heart, your spirit and your ability to deal with life.” That would be much more accurate. Never underestimate the power of words!
Even the simplest phrase lovingly said while wiping away your tears “Don’t worry, everything will be alright”, relaxes us if only for the moment and give us the strength to go on. The simple encouragement often missing from many sad lives can be the difference between success and failure, happiness and misery. A full or an empty life.

To get a more compelling idea of how you are affected by the power of words and how others can be affected by the words you say to them try this little exercise.
Try to be in a place where you won’t be disturbed and relax your defenses and your mind. Sit with your feet on the floor in a chair, or you could choose to recline.
Breathe deeply into your belly allowing your mind to quiet and all judgment to soften. Read each of the following words aloud one by one, then close your eyes and repeat them each 3 to 5 times with emotion.
Abundance, Affection, Appreciation, Authenticity, Awakening, Awareness,
Now do the same with these- see the power of words in action!
Agonized, Antagonistic, Aching, Anger, Assault, Awful, Asinine,
Now try these….
Happiness, Harmony, Healing, Heart, Honesty, Hope, Humour
Now these…
Harmed, Hit, Hate, Hazed, Hung, Hell, Humiliated, Hurt
Now these…
Safety, Satisfaction, Security, Self-Acceptance, Self-Esteem, Self-Respect, Service, Softness, Success, Strength
Now these…
Scarred, Sore, Struck, Suffering, Scraped, Senseless, Sad, Stupid, Sick, Shot, Shook, Sinful
I hope this simple exercise has given you a glimpse into the power of words. The power of words that you use about yourself and to yourself, to change your life. To encourage you or to stop you dead in your tracks. The power to give you hope and confidence and also the power of words to deplete you and cause you to run for the bottle.
Use the power of words wisely and kindly
It’s equally, if not more, important to recognize how words used harmfully can destroy those around you. Click to tweet
I’m sure if you look back in your own life you will remember a word or two said at just the right time that may have impacted you forever.
Wouldn’t it make life a whole lot easier, happier and more productive if we use our words wisely, if we use our words kindly with the intent to uplift, encourage and heal?
An awesome video showing the power of words
The media has helped increase our awareness of the bullying that is so prevalent today and thankfully a few young people are trying to turn that around as evidenced by the following story and video
Lauren Bush shot and edited a video called “Word Play” that dramatizes the impact of negative words. In the video, a young school girl is labeled, literally, as a “loser” and “stupid” by her classmates.
But then the 2-minute film shows how the depressed and bullied girl’s demeanor changes when another girl labels her as “sophisticated” and “pretty.”
I wasn’t shocked,” said Lauren’s proud mom, Shannon Bush. “She’s pretty creative and compassionate.”
The video, which Lauren produced in two hours for her middle school film class, took first place in the “Unite Against Bullying Commercial Challenge. The USA Network re-created her piece as a public service announcement debuting today.
“It really was just to inspire people that one person can make a difference,” Lauren told TODAY.
The teen wants to be a professional dancer when she gets older, but says after her quick success, she may consider a career in media as a side job.
