Positive Psychology aligns with the Law of Attraction.
“Positive Psychology is the scientific study of the strengths and virtues that enable individuals and communities to thrive”
As I did a little research for this blog I ran across some mainstream psychologists giving their opinion on how and why the Law of Attraction should be debunked. It is obvious to me that their understanding of the principles are less than clear.
For example http://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/the-blame-game/201401/the-law-attraction-revisited
Neil Farber, M.D., Ph.D.
Writes:
You will also never make any plans or consider any challenges (both express doubt and thus negativity). Further, to maximize your chance of success, you should not surround yourself with what you do not want such as anyone who is not in perfect mental or physical health. In other words, you should not be a healthcare provider or join any support groups.
“This is ridiculous! I’ve been a teacher of manifestation longer than this guy has been alive” Click to Tweet and I have NEVER, and again I say NEVER told any of my students not to make plans for their future and make them intelligently. My motto has been and always will be “think positive, but tie up your horse”.
He and many others like him also say or believe that the Law of Attraction says to never admit to feeling any doubt, unhappiness or fear of an unwanted situation popping up.
Once again, I’m not quite certain where they’re getting that nonsense. If they really had researched the meaning of the law they would never have seen an expert write or even say that. I know many teachers of this principle and we are all in agreement that if you feel something pretending it isn’t there will actually cause it to grow stronger.
I always encourage my students and clients to feel their feelings and even to express them in the correct and healthy way. This does not mean constantly going over your tales of woe with the neighborhood gossip or anyone that just loves to give negativity extra energy.
This means to realize that you are feeling negative, victimized, fearful or doubtful and feel it fully then do what’s necessary to get it out of your system. I teach that to my private clients and have a wonderful Purge the Pain Body mp3 that helps with these feelings.
“Nowhere does the true law of attraction say that you are not supposed to be real.” Click to Tweet But it does say that you are to place your focused attention on the things that you do want. It says to surround yourself with as much positivity as you can and to try and steer clear of anything that seems to be a “dark cloud” if you can. Positive psychology also focuses on this idea of surrounding yourself with positivity.
William Walker Atkinson wrote in his book “Thought Vibration or the Law of Attraction in the Thought World” that:
“The more Desire you have for a thing, the more you Love it; and the more you Love it, the greater will be the attractive force exerted toward its attainment - both within yourself, and outside of you.”
The part of this that is often misunderstood is when we give substantial emotional attention to negative or fearful thoughts and feelings this is translated to the universe as something we desire. You see that’s how the law of attraction works. It brings into the physical that which you give the most energy. The interpretation is that “you want this thing” whatever it is. The universe isn’t judging your desires as positive or negative, just that your desires are creative.
Positive Psychology Principles
I really identify with many of the principles of Positive psychology because as a dictionary definition “Positive psychology is the branch of psychology that uses scientific understanding and the effective intervention to aid in the achievement of a satisfactory life, rather than merely treating mental illness.”
As a coach I help my clients and students in a similar way. I don’t treat the problem; I offer a solution in the form of practices that work to create a happy and abundant life.
Part of my job as a life coach and an expert in LOA and Present Moment Awareness is to help my clients understand the beliefs that may be keeping them from living the life they desire.

Often these beliefs are so unconscious and buried that awareness of them is almost impossible without the help of someone like me who is able to easily find the underling belief that may have cause an unwanted result.
“Once we unearth that erroneous belief we can replace it with a new and supportive belief.” Click to Tweet We learn to understanding that our perception at the
time the belief was birthed was flawed. Or, it may be that the person who handed us that belief also had a slanted idea of “truth”. Once we find the belief causing the problem finding evidence for a new and empowering belief isn’t all that difficult.
The words Law of Attraction may be new, but the concept and truth of the law is as ancient as time itself.
As early as circa 391 BC, the Greek philosopher Plato had already stated that “likes tend toward likes” (or like attracts like) as in earth to earth, water to water, and so on.

Wonderful blog!!! It’s amazing that Plato, that many years ago, even knew this and tried to pass his knowledge on. I can’t wait to listen to your radio show on Positive Psychology.
Lorane,
Great post. I believe that psychology today is still enhancing the side of mental illness and what thoughts we have to be discarded instead of changed or rerouted. My history with the psych community is one of medication and cognitive therapy which is not in my opinion BAD but outdated. Law of attraction not only has the individual focus in the direction to change the thoughts and patterns for their good but it gives the body a positive vibration of joy and hope. I believe we need more of this in our lives as well as our community.

Very thought provoking article Lorane- interesting to see that positive psychology looks at the whole person’s way of life not just negatively focusing on their mental health.
Seems to me that mainstream psychology looks at things through a negative telescope!
Yes Sarah, I agree main stream psychology can be a very long and arduous process because so much time is spent on figuring out what’s wrong and why it’s wrong and the history of whats wrong. I say “let’s get on with a happy life. Let me show you how”.
Thank you for your comment.
