Living in the present moment will change your life too, and change it for the better. As some of you know I have always considered myself a major manifestor. Much of my life has been devoted to creating the future of my imagination and I’ve been quite successful at it. My clients and students have learned that skill from me and it’s worked for them too. BUT, getting all the stuff I wanted didn’t make me HAPPY! Believe it, that wasn’t the key to my happiness and it’s not the key to yours either.

I remember back to a time while I was in my hot tub under the starlit night sky, in my beautiful back yard of my then magnificent home and instead of being grateful for all I had, I was busy visualizing and trying to manifest more. Busy with this visualization I heard my inner voice say “So what?” The voice was so loud and clear in my head that I bolted upright out of my reverie, shocked hearing that voice. Relaxing back down into the soothing water I heard it again, “So What?” The meaning of that seems pretty obvious to me now, but at the time I just couldn’t figure out what that meant and I ignored that very clear message. You see, my entire identity was all about manifesting. Getting more and more and never actually living in the moment. Because of that mindset I couldn’t appreciate all that I had and I couldn’t hear that message. You see, that would have been the death of me. The death of the person I thought I was.

Pay attention to your inner voice

Pay attention to that voice. I didn’t and became physically ill and my ability to manifest went right out the window. I was lost and it took me over a year to once again find myself, but this time it was by becoming present. I learned that living in the moment was the only way I’d find peace and happiness. I learned that present moment awareness means being fully aware and available to the life I’m living as it’s occurring. Only then could I experience my life and enjoy all that was and is available to me.

The key to happiness

What is the key to happiness? Experiencing this moment right here, right now. Actually living in the moment, without wishing it to be different than it is. You simply experience this moment, without judging it. Accepting the moment as it is without comparing it to any other moment. Think back to something you’ve enjoyed. Then you had another experience of the same kind and you judged that one as even better. Now you begin comparing this moment to that moment. One becomes great and the other not as great. Pretty soon other experiences fall into the not so good category. Can you see how judgment and comparison causes unhappiness?

Eckhart Tolle in his Present Moment Reminders says “When you make the present moment, instead of past and future, the focal point of your life, your ability to enjoy what you do and with it the quality of your life increases dramatically.”

Living In the Moment - The Only Moment There Is - Present Moment Awareness

When you focus on making the present a joyful and loving experience, you don’t dwell on the past or worry about the future anymore. Excerpted from a page on the Huffington Post

When you’re living in the moment, without judging it as good or bad, without comparing it against any other moment, you simply accept it. When you accept what is, your mind is peaceful. You have clarity and you’re able to be creative because you’re not busy with that constant mind chatter. Now happiness is available to you and you’re consciously experiencing and living in the moment, or present moment awareness.

I’m sure you’re all familiar with that would, coulda, shoulda dance. When you’re living in the moment you notice yourself going into remorse about what you could have done or what you should have done and you can choose to bring yourself back into the Now. You realize NOW is the only moment there is and every other moment is either a thought of the past or a projection of the future. You become very aware of your thoughts about what was and your fears or worries about what may be and how those thoughts are creating unhappiness. Then you’re living with present moment awareness and you’re free to consciously choose thoughts and experiences to create happiness.

“The past has no power over the present moment.” - Eckhart Tolle

Cultivate the Inner Observer

When we’re lost in the past, or worried or fearful about the future we’re not aware that we’re not “here now”. This is where cultivating the inner observer, or witnessing consciousness is key. Once you bring in the inner observer you become aware of your thoughts and you can choose to bring yourself back into the present moment. http://loranegordon.com/yourhappinessway/inner-observer/

Living in the Now, The Only Moment There Is, gives you the following benefits

*Happiness
*Peaceful mind
*Appreciation of what is
*Access to expanded awareness
*Better communication
*Better decision making
*Better relationships
*Attract more good into your life
*Colors are brighter
*Experiences are richer

Tips to bring yourself into the Now, The Only Moment There Is

*Deep belly breathing
*Looking intently at something in nature, a tree, a flower, etc
*Looking at the spaces around the things
*Listening to the silence between the sounds
*Noticing the inner energy field of your body
*Giving your full attention to whatever you are doing at the moment
*Cultivate the Inner Observer or Witnessing Consciousness

When you’re present for your life and in touch with your inner observer you become aware of how your thoughts make you feel. It’s been said by so many of our learned teachers, that it’s not circumstances that cause unhappiness so much as your thoughts about those circumstances. When you’re deeply in the present moment you’re not thinking as much as you are being. When you do have a negative or judgmental thought your witnessing consciousness makes you aware of it and you’re able to redirect yourself back into the Now, the only moment there is.

When you do as one of my favorite teachers, Thich Nhat Hanh, directs us to do and

“Walk as if you are kissing the Earth with your feet.”

you are present and happiness is yours.

A very useful mini-talk. I was unaware of how past and future oriented I was until you made me stop and think about it. Definitely something to work on.

Yes, absolutely. The only way we experience those moments of joy is to be there in the present moment for them. Present Moment Awareness is crucial for true joy and happiness.
    Thanks for you thoughtful post.
