Let’s Get Down With The Aging Thing!
Healthy Aging is a Reality if you Have the Right Mindset
Aging, getting older; yes it’s happening whether we like it or not and I don’t know too many people past the age of 49 that really like it. Yes it does bring us wisdom and up until a certain age it brings us respect from others for our experience, but what then? How many of us are dealing with feeling invisible and unimportant, disregarded as being too old, irrelevant? STOP that now- you have a choice as to whether you embrace aging gracefully, choose to adopt a healthy aging approach or spend the rest of your life yearning for your youth.
Watch my video on how to accept this very real transition in life- aging is inevitable- how you handle it is not!
Now if you tell me that you have no particular negative feelings about getting older and all your signs of aging I must tell you that you’re not acknowledging your entire truth. Yes, I believe in thinking positive and looking for the good in every situation, but that doesn’t mean ignoring a real feeling. Anything we ignore is like pushing something under the rug. Sooner or later you’re going to trip on it and may really hurt yourself.
The Reality of Aging
There are the obvious things such as; we have fewer years to live. There are the physical changes that take place as the years go by, changes in they way we look and feel. How could you not acknowledge these very real things? They are happening and only by uncovering your feelings to the light of day can you truly move forward on your journey with integrity and real honest joy.
Now let’s look at all the positives, the joyous things about getting older and the benefits of us aging

My 65-plus father once told me that when he looks at young folks he feels sheer pity. Not what I was expecting to hear. But they’re fit, healthy, and able-bodied I said confusedly. True, he agreed. But they just have so many hurdles ahead of them that they can’t even imagine. There are so many uphill battles they have yet to face. I’m confident I’ve already faced the worst of my problems, he said. Let’s hope he’s right.

When I was 19, a wise wino told me, “The truth only hurts for a minute.” In September I will turn 60, and that truth hurts for more than a minute. The sad thing is that when (if) I am 70, I will be wishing I were 60, like I wish I were 50, like I wished I were 40 when I turned 50. However, when I turned 40, I was such a party animal that I did not realize I was 40 until I was 41. (Don’t judge me.)
This should tell us to appreciate the moment. How many things can we look back at to realize that we weren’t actually there, or that our thoughts about “what was” didn’t allow us to fully appreciate that time in life. We need to grab hold of the moment and understand our purpose in life- see my post about having such a purpose after 50.
A Few Good Things About Aging
- You know that having fun or a good time at anything or anywhere is up to you.
- You’re able to savor the day and not be in such a rush for tomorrow.
- You’re okay wearing comfortable shoes! (remember struggling into those gorgeous 4” heels ladies, just to look hot?)
- The early bird dinner specials for seniors!
- Senior discounts for most everything if you ask.
- Your relationships are less volatile and more mature.
- You are less concerned with how you look. That alone saves oodles of time just getting ready to go out.
